Impact for Alarm Signalling

The migration from analogue to digital networks will have a significant impact on alarm signalling services due to differences between the underlying technologies involved. The most notable impact will be seen in relation to Digital Communicators and Copper derived channel services:

Digital Communicators:

Experts predict that up to 40% of Digital Communicators will experience problems as a result of the migration to Next Generation Networks. For many within the security industry, problems are already hitting hard, caused by a technological mismatch in the analogue and digital signalling transmission process. To be transmitted successfully over an IP network the analogue alarm message has to be converted to digital. When already digitally encoded alarm signals undergo this process they are subject to the issues of reshaping, latency and jitter. (link white paper) This often results in the Digital Communicator making multiple call attempts to get the alarm message through. At best the result is unexpected calls on the phone bill, at worst a lost alarm.

Copper Derived Channel Signalling services (e.g. BT Redcare):

Here the problem is how to deal with fibre, and the accompanying digital equipment in the local loop; fibre networks do not transmit the lower frequencies used by these services. Provided the physical path to and from the exchange equipment remains a copper pair of wires, and the connection capabilities in the exchange remain available, these services will continue to operate. Interestingly to avoid any potential issues altogether Telstra in Australia has taken the decision to withdraw its Securitel (Redcare equivalent) service as of January 09.

Taking Action to Secure Your Future

1. Migrating Legacy Services

Upgrading your customers to Emizon IP is easy and means a smooth transition to the digital environment, plus the ability to take advantage of new applications such as online servicing. Designed with installers in mind the TCD uses a standard industry footprint, has a dial capture facility and, up until it is commissioned, can be installed on any line, site or broadband service provider. And like all today’s success stories Emizon’s innovation is software based, so we can pass on efficiencies of scale as we grow. So you know that with Emizon it’s our services that will increase not our prices.

2. Working with Broadband

More and more companies are moving all their communications (voice, data, EPOS, IP-CCTV, alarms) onto one IP based network. One network means simplified infrastructure, better network performance and reduced costs - gone is the need for separate monthly access line charges. For new builds IP is often not even an option, new industrial and residential developments are now moving straight to fibre, removing the need for PSTN lines altogether.

Leveraging the customer’s existing infrastructure and securing their alarm signalling with Emizon IP makes sense in all these situations. What’s more Emizon provides businesses with the added peace of mind in knowing that their broadband is being monitored.
